What to expect from EMDR via telehealth

Starting any new form of therapy can bring up questions, especially when the appointment is taking place online. You may be wondering how EMDR works through telehealth, what the session might feel like and whether you will still have enough time and support to move at a comfortable pace.

At Gemstone Psychology, Registered Psychologist Delusha offers telehealth appointments and incorporates EMDR into her broader therapeutic approach where appropriate. Each person’s needs are different, so sessions are tailored rather than following a one-size-fits-all process.

WHAT IS EMDR?

EMDR is a structured, evidence-based psychological therapy. It can form part of the work a psychologist does with someone who is experiencing distress connected to difficult or emotionally significant experiences.

EMDR is not rushed, and it is not simply a matter of immediately revisiting something distressing. The psychologist works with the person at an appropriate pace, with attention given to comfort, preparation and stabilisation throughout the process.

Delusha also draws on a range of other evidence-based approaches, including Cognitive Behaviour Therapy, Mindfulness-Based Therapies, Acceptance and Commitment Therapy and Schema Therapy. The approach used in any session will depend on the individual and what is most appropriate for them.

HOW DOES EMDR WORK THROUGH TELEHEALTH?

Telehealth allows you to attend your psychology appointment remotely rather than travelling to the practice.

The session is still guided by your psychologist, with time to discuss what you are experiencing, what feels manageable and what support you may need during the appointment. Delusha takes a holistic approach to mental wellbeing, recognising the connections between mind, body and spirit. Her practice is informed by ongoing learning in culturally responsive, trauma-informed and neuro-affirmative therapeutic approaches.

The experience of EMDR can vary from person to person. Delusha will work with you at a pace that considers your individual needs rather than expecting every session to look the same.

WHAT CAN I EXPECT DURING AN APPOINTMENT?

Your appointment may include time to discuss:

• what has brought you to therapy

• what you would like support with

• how you are feeling on the day

• whether EMDR is appropriate for the work you are doing

• what pacing and support may be helpful during the session

There may also be time spent on preparation and stabilisation before moving into more emotionally demanding work.

You do not need to arrive knowing exactly what to say or how the session should unfold. The process is guided collaboratively, and you can raise questions or concerns with Delusha as they come up.

CHOOSING BETWEEN A 50-MINUTE AND 75-MINUTE SESSION

Delusha offers both standard 50-minute appointments and extended 75-minute sessions.

The longer appointment is available for people who may benefit from having additional space within the session. This can allow more time for the person to feel comfortable and safe, support appropriate pacing and create room for stabilisation after what can sometimes be emotionally heavy EMDR work.

A 75-minute appointment is not automatically the right option for everyone, and it should not be viewed as clinically superior to a standard session. The most suitable appointment length will depend on the individual and the work being undertaken.

IS TELEHEALTH EMDR SUITABLE FOR EVERYONE?

Telehealth and EMDR will not necessarily be the right fit for every person or every situation.

Suitability needs to be considered individually. Delusha can discuss your needs, the support you are seeking and whether telehealth appointments may be appropriate for you.
